A prominent new figure is preparing to enter the Gambian political arena. Ambassador Essa Bokarr Sy, a seasoned diplomat with an impressive international career, has announced his intention to launch a political party ahead of the country’s 2026 presidential election.
A former Deputy Director General at the OIC-Gambia Secretariat, Mr. Sy brings over 27 years of professional experience in diplomacy, strategic analysis, education, military affairs, and security.
His diplomatic career has seen him represent The Gambia in several major capitals. He has served as ambassador to France, Taiwan, and the United States, while also being concurrently accredited to countries such as Russia, Switzerland, Portugal, Hungary, and Greece, and acted as The Gambia’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO in Paris. During his tenure in Washington, his jurisdiction extended to Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Venezuela, and Cuba.
With this announcement, Essa Bokarr Sy joins a growing list of figures aiming to play a central role in reshaping the Gambian political landscape ahead of the 2026 elections. His move marks a new chapter in a career thus far dedicated to diplomacy and public service.
